    Champhai R.D Block was created on 17.11.2005. The Block Headquarters is 194 Kms from Aizawl, the state capital. It lies in the North Eastern corner of the state between 23-24 degree North Latitudes and 93-94 degree East Longitudes. It has an area of 758.67 sq.Km with an International Boundary of 68 kms with Myanmar. The climatic condition of the area is moderate with an annual rainfall of 3017.69mm.

According to 2011 census, the Champhai district has a population of 125,370. The district has a population density of 39 inhabitants per sq km. The literacy rate of the district is 93.51% and the sex ratio is 981 females for every 1000 males. The major religion in this district is Christianity with Hindus and Muslims forming the rest. Mizo is the principal language spoken here. 


Agriculture is the major occupation of the people of this district. The main crop grown here is rice. Due to the cultivation of large acres of land of rice fields and because of the maximum amount of rice production, this district is known as the ‘Rice Bowl of Mizoram’. The district also has a number of commercial centers and people employed in them. There are also shops where imported products from the neighboring country are sold. The Champhai town also serves as a gateway of all business activities between the two nations – India and Myanmar.


There are a number of schools for elementary and secondary education in Champhai. Some of these schools are Champhai Higher Secondary School, G.M.H.S.S. School, Holy Cross School, Bungzung School, Teikhang HS School etc. There is the Government Champhai College for higher education. 


The district of Champhai has many utility services like banks, telecom services and electricity services. The major leading telecom networks like Aircel, Airtel, Reliance, Vodafone and BSNL have their services in Champhai district. The Champhai district is scattered with beautiful valleys, lakes, historical places and memorials. Many of these places are associated with ancient folklore and legends. Some of the tourist places include Rih Dil, Kungawrhi Puk, Lianchhiari Lunglentlang, Thasiama Seno Neihna, Mangkhaia Lung, Fiara Tui, Sikpui Lung, Lamsial Puk, Mura Puk, Kawtchhuah Ropui, Tiau River, Murlen National Park and Lengteng National Park.

By Road: Champhai district is located at a distance of 194 kms from Aizawl. The National Highway 54 connects Champhai to other places. There are bus facilities and sumo services from Aizawl and other neighboring places to the district. The Mizoram government buses and taxis ply regularly between these two destinations.

  • By Rail: The nearest railway station is in Silchar in Assam located at a distance of 184 kms away.
